This letter was submitted to the Gunnison Times this week by our board president–

This past Saturday, I joined Partners Executive Director Tina McGuinness, her junior partner Mechala, and mentoring representatives from Delta, Montrose and Ouray, for a breakfast with Governor Hickenlooper. We had a great time sharing stories and highlighting the positive role mentoring has in our communities. The governor also presented the group with a proclamation, declaring January as “Celebrate Mentoring Month” in Colorado. Included in the proclamation are statements like:

WHEREAS, mentors, backed by quality mentoring programs, play a powerful role in preventing substance abuse and youth violence, as well as boosting academic achievement and workforce readiness; and

WHEREAS, mentors help ensure that Colorado’s children will grow to their full potential as the next generation of leaders, helping to secure the future of this state and nation; and…

On behalf of the Board of Directors for Gunnison Country Partners, I’d like to thank everyone who participates in and supports our local Partners program. Our success would not be possible without so many of you in the valley…and our very dedicated staff!

Yet, even with steady programmatic growth over the past seven years, at least 25 youth between Lake City and Crested Butte await senior partners. Maybe this is the year YOU become a positive force in another kid’s life! We need you.

To learn more about mentoring–and all the things we accomplish every month–please visit www.gunnisonmentors.com or call the office at 641-5513. Join in the celebration and power of mentoring!

See you there!

To my mentor and aunt Linda:

I just wanted to write you a note to tell you how much I appreciate the influence you had on my life. When I was very young I remember only seeing you about once every other year because you lived out of state. When you were in town you asked me all kinds of questions about my life and you really seemed to care about the answers. You made me feel so important and valued. Even though you were only in town for a little while you wanted to come with me to my dance practices and things like that and I remember asking you “Why?” and you said that you wanted me to know that I was important to you. You always smiled ear to ear when you saw me, you always complimented me and you always listened and cared about what I had to say.

When I got older I decided I wanted to move out of state and live with you. You said yes right away. I had just graduated college and had very little confidence about starting a career. You got me job writing grants even though I had no experience. You were a grant writer yourself and told them how great I was and you coached me along the way so that I would be as great as you told them I would be. You then got me a job as a writer for a newspaper that you worked for by having me write some articles for you that you submitted under your name. This helped me get work writing articles for them under my own name and for pay. Little did they know, I submitted the articles to you first so you could edit them before I sent them in. Every article I sent to you, you would tell me how well it was written and give me little bits of advice that helped me get better. I always looked forward to your compliments and critiques because they came across so genuine and thoughtful. You always made me believe I was so smart and talented. I really felt like I could do anything during the year that I lived with you.

Now, 10 years after that experience I am writing grants for a non-profit that I work for and I have you to thank for that early experience that I was able to put on my resume. I also believe you have influenced me to always want to help other people reach their full potential if I am able to. If I think someone is talented, I tell them. If I can teach someone something, I will. I believe that it is your example that has led me to act this way. Thank you.
