Please join us on April 18th for a wonderful training. Beginning at 5:30pm at the Partners Office, Lealyn Poponi, a senior partner and the Nurturing Parent educator for our county, will be providing a training sharing some of the parenting skills (and these are great mentoring skills) she teaches in her NPP classes.

This training is unique because we are inviting Parents and Junior Partners too! Parents and Senior Partners will work with Lealyn while Junior Partners experience adventure with Laura from Mountain Roots.

Here is how Lealyn describes this opportunity.

Lealyn Poponi, coordinator of the Nurturing Parenting Program (NPP) for Gunnison County, has been a Senior Partner matched with her JP going on 6 years. She is excited to share with you some of the techniques, philosophies and values from NPP that have helped her with the challenging (yet very rewarding!) task of mentoring youth. This workshop will include lessons and activites on the following 3 topics as well as take home worksheets and a certificate of completion.

  • Setting Ground Rules: Learn to discuss potential problems and issues before they arise and how to get your JP to value the guildlines you’d like them to follow
  • Communicating With Respect: Learn how to deal with conflict, not only to avoid hurt feelings but so you can model appropriate communication techniques for your JP
  • Building Self Worth in Children: Learn how to give your JP the positive personal power they need to make good choices in life and to help them feel valued and loved

This is all really great stuff. And with parents there, this will be an incredible experience for everyone!

Join us for an incredible adventure at Hartmam’s Rocks. We will enjoy learning outdoor skills, play in relays, scavenger hunts, and more. Please join us– April 14th.

What would current senior partners tell you to get you to become a mentor with Partners?

It is very rewarding, it’s the only volunteer experience I’ve had where I’ve truly felt I’ve helped improve someone else’s life
~Current Senior Partner, Abbey Kuhns

Partners give you the opportunity to give back to your community.
~Current Senior Partner, Danielle Sutherland

It’s fun, it’s rewarding, it’s challenging–you learn so much and you truly make a difference.
~Current Senior Partner

We recently gathered current senior partners and asked them a series of questions. We wanted to make sure our senior partners were getting what they wanted and expected from our program. Seems like they did.

100% of our senior partners rated their experience with mentoring at Partners a 9 or 10 out of 10!

That is pretty cool. They mentioned that hey have gained a lot, such as;

  • Fun in the community
  • Personal insights & satisfaction of being there for someone else
  • learning lots of patience
  • giving back to community
  • Parental perspective
  • Good trainings
  • Appreciation
  • and more!

Doug Hanshaw, the Seventh Judicial Courts Problem Solving Coordinator will be at our office this Thursday to offer an incredible training on Motivational Interviewing.

Motivational Interviewing offers great skills that will help us motivate and learn more about the kids we mentor.

Ehow.com puts it this way:

Motivational interviewing (MI) is a counseling style that is goal-directed and seeks to gently help a client discover why he is ambivalent to change.

You do not want to miss this training.  Doug is here from Montrose and offers these trainings across the Western Slope.  He is entertaining and very informative.

Join us for light refreshments and a powerful training that will have you gain new perspectives.
